Coastal mesozooplankton respond to decadal environmental changes via community restructuring

چکیده
Long-term ecological research has revealed the impact of climate on marine ecosystems at multiple time scales. Changes in pelagic system have been detected LTER-MC site Gulf Naples (Tyrrhenian Sea, western Mediterranean) since 1984. Here we analyzed series to determine whether zooplankton had significantly changed over three decades 1984–2015. In addition seasonal cycle as main mode temporal variability, observed long-term trends functional groups and species. Copepods, most abundant group, declined years owing a decrease abundance Acartia clausi, Centropages typicus, Paracalanus parvus complex, Oithona spp. Increasing were for strict carnivores (chaetognaths) typical filter feeders (cladocerans, appendicularians, thaliaceans); latter may be linked higher density <5 μm phytoplankton. Two shifts detected: (i) 1985–87, similarly regime registered other basins Northern Hemisphere, (ii) after 2011, likely related local atmospheric forcing. The disappearance or some neritic copepods increased offshore species seem reflect enhanced influence open Tyrrhenian waters sampling site. Despite these changes, no significant total overall composition, which indicates restructuring within whole community. These results underline need examine entire diversity spectrum improve our knowledge their traits detect interpret variability.

متن کاملDecadal Changes in the World's Coastal Latitudinal Temperature Gradients
Most of the world's living marine resources inhabit coastal environments, where average thermal conditions change predictably with latitude. These coastal latitudinal temperature gradients (CLTG) coincide with important ecological clines,e.g., in marine species diversity or adaptive genetic variations, but how tightly thermal and ecological gradients are linked remains unclear. A first step is ...
متن کاملSimulating Decadal Coastal Morphodynamics
Coastal geomorphic systems provide many services of key importance to humankind, including protection from flood and erosion hazards, diverse habitats and amenity values (Agardy et al., 2005; Jones et al., 2011). However, these systems are widely undergoing degradation that can be substantially attributed to the cumulative direct and indirect effects of human interference. Declining sediment in...
متن کاملDiscriminating mesozooplankton communities in Bushehr marine coastal ecosystems- Persian Gulf
Coastal ecosystems of Bushehr are shallow environments subject to human impacts, including shrimp aquaculture and urban expansion activities. A spatial-temporal study was conducted in order to assess the actual ecological status of the creeks, estuary and marine sites on the basis of their taxonomic composition and density of mesozooplankton. Zooplankton species distribution and abundance data ...
